Judge Jules Interview

How and when, did you first start DJing?

I first started in the late Eighties, and began by promoting my own illegal parties.

Where was your first Set?

At one of my own parties.

How did you get into Radio?

I was on two pirate stations before joining London's Kiss FM in 1990, and was headhunted
by Radio 1 in '97.

What do you enjoy more, out of Presenting, DJing and Producing?
I enjoy every aspect of my job but nothing beats performing in front of a crowd, so I'd
have to say that.

And how do you manage to divide your time between them all?

You have to be fairly organised and motivated.

Are you working on any projects in the studio at the moment?

I constantly put tracks together under an assortment of pseudonyms, including Hi-gate,
Angelic and VPL. I've just remixed Brainbug's classic "Nightmare".

You must be overwhelmed with your continued success and appreciation from all in the
industry, what do you feel are the reasons for this, and how does it make you feel?

I count myself incredibly lucky to do the job I always dreamed of. I've remained popular
because my enthusiasm's never waned, and my love for the music has never faltered.

As a DJ you get to travel the world, where in your opinion is leading the way and shinning
above the rest?

The global dance scene is strong in every continent, it's difficult to pinpoint one
particular spot where the club crowds are better than the rest, therefore I can only tell
you my favourite place as an all-round destination, and that's definitely Australia.

Being at the fore front of the industry for many years, do you feel the scene has changed,
and it what ways?

It's gone from being underground to being excessively mainstream, to having struck a
perfect balance between the two in the past couple of years.

You appear in the South West fairly regulary, how does our scene compare to the rest of
the country and what are your favourite nights down here?

It's always been one of the best regions in Britain for atmosphere. There are loads of
nights worthy of mention. Slinky in Bristol, the Dance Academy in Plymouth, Slinky in
Bournemouth, the Brunel Rooms Swindon, to name but a few.
With lots of family down there, a trip to Cornwall is always something I eagerly anticipate,
and 'Tranzaction' is without question one of the finest dance nights in the South west.

For anyone who hasn't seen you DJ before, what can they expect musically and visual?

Interactive, playing the banging end of trance.

Finally, whats coming up for Judge Jules in 2004?

My next MoS mix album in March, and the return of my Judgement Sundays night in Ibiza
from June-September.
