Guffy Interview

2004 has seen Guffy rise to the top, with massive gigs all over the country, 3 quality
releases under his belt and his continued involvement in Mixmag, not forgetting his
storming debut with us at Tranzaction, Expect to see a lot more of this guy in 2005...
We caught up with him to reflect on 2004 and get a taste of whats to come in 2005..

Firstly how have you been and what have you been up to since your last visit?

I've had a mad few months if I'm honest, quite a lot's happened. I've just recently got
over a broken foot and toe! Not very glamorous but it grounded me for about 6 weeks which was a nightmare! So I've just had my first gig back at Eddie Halliwell's Bosh Tour which, by the time I got on the decks I was like a kid in a sweet shop. Thought I was going to burst! Apart from that I've been gigging all over the place and I've had my first three
tunes released recently as well. Really pleased with them and they all got snapped up by
big labels too so that's a bonus. Tidy brought out 'Cruize', Nukleuz brought out 'Bring
The Funk' and Scott Mac's label Limit is about to bring out 'Arumbahh' so I'd chuffed to
bits. I've also recently left Nukleuz after 18 months with them which has really opened doors for me too. I'm super grateful to Will and Lisa at Nukleuz for taking me on in 2003 but I needed to move on to open new doors. I don't play hard house so I could only go so far with a hard dance agency. My diary has gone banana's for 2005 with bookings into August so I'm super excited about the year ahead.

How did you find your tranzaction debut?

I wasn't sure what to expect, Eddie had a real good time down there so I was expecting big things. It's a totally different crowd down there, lot's of fired up people just looking for some good tunes. Everyone was uber friendly and even the bouncers got stuck in! Crowd was great as well considering that I'd never been down there before. You find nights every now and again that take you back and Tranzaction is one of them. The South Coast is really firing on all cylinders at the moment, can't wait to get back down now.

How does the night and clubbers compare to rest of UK?

Like I said above, I think that it's a bit like it used to be a couple of years ago. It's a real mission to get to the venue if you don't live around that area so those that make the pilgrimage are really up for it. As long as you play good tunes, the crowd goes off. I play quite experimental stuff in my sets and they really got stuck in so I was over the moon.

Tell us abit about your role at mixmag?

Mimxag have been ace to me. I've known the people there for a while now through when I
started 4lubbers.net with Salvador, Nigel and Dave. They asked me to take over the hard
dances pages at the end of 2003, not long after I joined Nukeuz when things went mad for me. Was great to be asked to do the pages as it's the feature, charts, cheekies and other bits and bobs. I also help out elsewhere in the mag when needed when it's anything to do with the techy/hard dance material too. I think it's been really good as my love of tech trance and techno means the pages have opened up a lot too instead of just having head down, hard house madness on there. They also made me one of the Future Hero's for 2004 as well so it's been a bonkers in terms of all the Mixmag stuff. Have a lot to thank Gavin, Tracey, Nick, James and Ralph for to be honest; they have been a massive support.

How is the production side of things going?

Production is going amazing. Had my first three tracks out in November as mentioned above which all went to massive labels so that was a huge encouragement. Working on a track at the moment with Greg Brookman and just finished another track with Ingo as well. By the time you read this I should have finished an absolute belter with Scott Mac which I'm super excited about, it's sounding amazing and it's going to be right up the street of Ferry,
Tiesto and Marco V so I'm keen to get it to them. Sorting out the studio diary for 2005 as
we speak and continuing to learn Logic with my housemate and production genuis Todd Tobias who I'm also doing a big trance track with too so it's all go.

What have been your highlights of 2004?

Too many to list really. Getting my first three tracks signed to big labels was cool. I've also played some amazing nights such as Escape Into The Park, Hard House Academy and
of course getting down on the south coast with Tranz, Dance Academy and Hard South was cool. Playing in Helsinki was a great experience too which blew my mind; two hours of darkness was hard to get my head around. Getting on the front cover of Mixmag as one of the Future Hero's with Eddie Halliwell and Fergie was a head spin too. Reading the mag for years then getting in the cover was really mad. It's just been a great year in general, I've been very lucky and had some great people behind me. Keeping your feet firmly on the floor and enjoying yourself are the key. I've listened and learned loads this year so I'm looking forward to 2005.

What have you got coming up in 2005?

Loads more production coming up with various producers as well as a packed diary already.
I've got bookings all over the place with people like my good friends Good Greef who've
been a huge supporter throughout as well as Garlands, Inside Out, Euphoria, Tranzaction,
Polysexual, Wildchild and so on. I've got a lot of radio stuff this year too but I can't say anything yet. I'll really get to develop my sound this year too. I'm known for playing very different so I'm looking forward to it maturing this year.

We will be seeing allot of you next year, what can we ecpect on your return?

Just getting in amongst it! The tranz crowd is really patient so I get to play loads of
stuff that doesn't get heard a lot. I'm now play a lot more CD and using technology a lot
more too. The CDJ1000 is amazing as is the DJM600 but not many DJs use them to the max. I've spent the last year perfecting loads of tricks and stuff that makes it all a bit more interesting. I'l also be sporting many different haircuts as well as an unhealthy love for JD & Coke! Seriously though, it will just be loads of fun as I love getting stuck in and
having a laugh - I can't wait.
