Charlie G - Interview
When did you first get into DJ'ing? I guess I've always been into dance music since I was a nipper, I grew up listening to all the early 90's house and I started getting into the whole scene, buying DJ mix tapes as
diverse as Carl Cox, Tony De Vit and Blocko, I was only 13 so I couldn't go to the nights
I wanted to but I still kept up with it all. Most of my mates ambitions were to become
professional footballer's, I wanted to be a DJ. When and where did you play your first set (and how did you get it)
A local club had a DJ competition going on, I was only 14 but me and my mate thought we
would give it a go. I had no experience, no decks of my own, just a passion for it and a
hand full of records from the local HMV.
How did it go? It went surprisingly well, somehow I managed to win. From that I gained some warm up sets at the club, and started to get a bit of exposure. At this point my parents thought I was a natural and destined to be the next Judge Jules so they bought me all my own kit and helped me out. A few months down the line aged 14, the club asked me to start my own under 18's dance night which took right off, causing a bit of interest with other night-clubs. How would you define your style? A mix of "Feel Good Funky House" building up to Upliftin House anything to get your foot
tapping and head nodding. I also play Hard House and Trance sets when they come up so I'm fairly diverse in what I play. Im always getting into new sounds and genres all the time,
but my main passion is the Funky Sh$t. Were you influenced by other DJ's and if so, who? So many DJ's for different reasons, without a doubt Alex P and Brandon Block as ive followed them and looked up to them from the start, not just for their music but the
enthusiasm and energy they bring. On the technical side, Id say Eric Morillo is the best
DJ I've ever heard, he takes mixing to another level, with so many different things goin on. He has such a passion for it and manages to do everything, DJing, Producing, Promoting,
you got to admire that. I guess im always gaining more influences each time I see some one new play, that's how you develop and hopefully, get better. What venues have you played? Held residencies at The Barn Club and Club 2000, also played for; Trance4mation, World DJ
Day, Dance Academy, Magnet, L2 and loads of other bits and pieces. What is your fav' venue?
My fav venue that I've played is definitely a Tranz@ction night at L2, the place i transformed and is hard to beat.Elsewhere, I think Slinky in Bristol is a cool place,
haven't had the chance to do the "supercclubs like GK, Crasher, Cream etc so cant compare
it to the big boys.
How do you see Tranz@ction now and in the future? Tranz@ction is definitely leading the way in the South-West, for a weekly night in Cornwall
to have such quality line-ups is amazing. It easily competes with the big league club nights
all over the UK. The night has such a strong following and well renowned reputation. Other
dance nights keep popping up to try and compete, but don't even come close. Lately the
nights have been getting even better and there's a real good feeling about the way its all
heading. Hopefully in the future I hope that tranz@ction becomes even bigger, with tour
nights across the country and even fatter line-ups, I also want to see funky@ction take
off and start getting some big names in and also get some tour nights happening . I can
see tranz@ction going big time with the likes of GoodGreef and Slinky etc in the not so
distant future. What do you think Tranz@tion brings to L2 ? It transforms the whole of the upstairs into an underground dance night, and brings with
it an unrivalled and unique clubbing atmosphere and experience. It gives clubbers the
chance to see such a diverse selection of the worlds finest DJ's. From house music with
Alex P and Blocko, to underground techno with Mrk EG and also delivers the big name
superstars such as Jules and Dave Pearce. It gives everyone the chance to experience the
superclub experience without having to travel hundreds of miles. Oh yeah, most of all it
brings "Mental, Crazy up4it Club kids"!!!!! What are your plans for the future? I want to stay with Tranz@ction and continue to make it Bigger and Better, as well as
focusing on getting Funky@ction going strong. I also want to start getting about a bit more,
hopefully getting some bookings further up the line and maybe a few more locally as well.
I just want to play out as much as possible really to as many people as I can, that's what
its all about I guess. Hopefully start getting some tunes of my own together, I'm a
qualified sound engineer and got well into making music a couple of years ago but slowed
right down, so getting in to that side of it all would be cool. Im only 18 so ive got a
long time to get somewhere I hope! What do you do when not DJ'ing? Not A lot!! I help out with the promotion side of it all as much as I can, whether
its getting posters out or dealing with the press, anything to get more people through
the door! I also write for Twenty$Seven magazine, which involves interviewing DJ's and any
other bits and pieces that come up and I spend allot of my time hunting for those golden
tunes guaranteed to fill the floor. I guess everything else I do is DJ related anyway! Jon Sparkes (Tranz@ction) |
