Cally And Juice Interview

1. As we come to the end of the 2006, sum up your year for us, how has it been?

We’ve definitely had our best year to date. Bookings have literally gone through the roof, with us not even having one weekend off this year and anything up to 6 bookings on a weekend. We’ve written a lot more tracks and bootlegs than we have done previously which have usually counted for anything up to 90% of the material played in our sets which means we now have a more unique sound than ever before. We’ve definitely put more into the performance side of our sets also this year rather than just playing an energetic set with lots of tricks and to top the year off we’ve both given up our day jobs, paving the way for an even better 2007.

2. Whats your best and worst moments of the year?

Best: the best moments would have to be playing our first Q Dance event, Defqon.1in Amsterdam and then flying back to Wales the same day to play at the Escape Into The Park Festival, then also the South West Four Metro Weekender Festival at Coopers Field in Cardiff and also playing both the main arena and Bionic arena at Slammin Vinyl’s WestFest event.

Worst: definitely the weekend just gone, we turned up at a packed Air in Birmingham for Hardcore Till I Die which looked like it was going to be totally amazing, but there were technical problems right the way through the set, including the sound intermittently cutting out of the monitors and the front speakers all the way through the set and only 1 of 4 record decks and 1 of 2 CD decks working.

3. What’s been the funniest thing you have seen?

Although we can’t really think up a funny thing we’ve seen out DJing this year, previous to that one of the funniest things we’ve probably seen was Shocker falling off the stage while hosting our set. The stage had a section coming out at one side and he could see this out of the corner of his eye but in front of him the stage ended which he then found out much to his horror. Mid sentence he fell, and scraped his back down the stage. Not sure though if he’d agree with us about it being the funniest thing he’s witnessed!

4. Best Addition and worst addition to the scene in general?

Best -: electro, probably the most different and refreshing sound to be introduced to the dance music scene in a long while. It’s definitely influenced our more recent tracks and bootlegs.

Worst: - jumpstyle without a doubt. Many of the dutch hardstyle DJ’s who emerged from the Dutch hardcore scene (not the happy hardcore we have in the UK, but hardcore techno or Gabba as it’s known over here), who have tried to push the hardstyle scene back in this direction by taking the bassline out of hardstyle and having heavier beats, less melody and an overall darker feel to the music. Imagine gabba slowed down to the same bpm as hardstyle and you’re nearly there. Awful.

5. Biggest tune of the year?

It’s difficult to pick just one favourite tune but if we go by the tune that gets the biggest crowd reaction every time we play it then we’d probably have to say our bootleg of Tarantula by Pendulum. The surprise and delight on peoples faces when the Drum and Bass kicks in always brings a big smile to our faces.

6. You have played at Tranzaction regularly over the year, how has it been and what’s your thoughts on the night and clubbers?

It’s amazing how an event can keep successfully pulling people in each week when many of the bigger brands had to cut down to one event per month not so long ago. There’s not many clubs that can pull that off in the current climate. As for the clubbers, they’re a completely mad, up-for-it, and friendly bunch that remind us of our own clubbers at our Bionic and Breathe events.

7. What do you think makes Tranzaction stand out?

The atmosphere, whenever we’re there it’s always packed and like we’ve already mentioned above, it’s one of the few clubs in the country to rival the atmosphere found at a Bionic or Breathe event. Definitely one of our favourite places to play.

8. What’s your predictions for hard dance over the next year?

Hard to say, the electro sound is still very exciting and fresh at the moment though already this has startede to crossover into the more commercial market so that could mean it doesn’t last as a big sound throughout the whole of next year. I think as the hardstyle sound has gone darker and heavier and has definitely moved more towards the jumpstyle sound I think many people who preffered the more bouncy uplifting stuff will move back towards the hard trance sound which is definitely having a resurgence.

9. Look into the future and give us an estimated round up of what 2007 will bring for you?

2007 will definitely be our best year to date after the successful year we’ve had this year. As well as Cally giving up his day job earlier this year to put all his efforts into DJing, Bionic and production, Juice has now also followed suit and done the same. This means next year you should be seeing a lot more productions from us and we’ll hopefully now have more time to chase the venues we’ve still yet to play in as well as starting to push ourselves abroad more, something we’ve never really had the time to chase before.

10. What can clubbers expect from your next Tranzaction appearance?

They know what they can expect if they’ve seen us before. We won’t be playing a set as such, together with Shocker we’ll be putting on a performance that is always so well received by the fantastic crowd there, and we can’t wait.
